Soccer clashes kill 68 in Egypt

News4u-News Desk- At least 68 people have been reported to be killed in shocking violence following a soccer match between two popular clubs in Egypt’s Port Said city.

Without giving specific figures, Deputy Health Minister Hesham Shiha said in a statement that hundreds were injured.

However, sources among the medics, who had received the bodies said at least 68 people were slain in Wednesday’s violence.

A security official and a medic said fans of the home team, Masry, swarmed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Ahly,Egypt’s top team.

They threw stones, fireworks, and bottles at the fans and injured some players.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a medic at a morgue in Port Said said some of the dead were security officers.
The exact causes of the deaths were not immediately known.

The security official said fans chased players and cornered their supporters on the field, throwing stones and bottles at them.

The players were later taken to the locker room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player, told state TV.

“One of the fans died in the dressing room,” Ahmed Nagi, an Ahly goalkeeping coach, said on Egyptian state television.

“And there are thousands of wounded lying in the hallways,” Nagi said.

In another incident, Egyptian state TV footage showed protesters setting fire to the Cairo Stadium after a football match between the Zamalek and Ismailia team.

Zamalek coach decided not to continue the second half of the match after the violent clashes which erupted simultaneously in the Port Said Stadium.

David Beckham Visits Sick Australian Kids

News4u-Entertainment Desk- Soccer star David Beckham was held up for three hours at the Los Angeles airport as his bags were searched.
The 34-year-old footballer, who flew in from London on Thursday, was fretting and fuming when customs at the airport pulled his 12 holdalls apart, reported Sun online.
“David wasn’t pleased. He ranted at airport security. He even asked his handlers to do something but there was nothing they could do,” said a source.
The previous night he played for England against Belarus at Wembley and then went out to celebrate with his friend Dave Gardner at London’s Nobu and Bungalow 8 until 3am.
Being an English footballer, Beckham has been staying in the US for quite sometime now with his wife former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and two sons. He plays for the American Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy and the England national team.

News4u-Entertainment Desk- David Beckham paid a visit to the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital in Australia to meet sick kids and their families.

David Beckham has visited sick children in an Australian hospital.

The British soccer star - who last week spent time with underprivileged youngsters in the Philippines - took a trip to the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital, where he spent an hour visiting young patients and their families.

Among those he met was 19-month-old Allegra Fewson-Ward, who is suffering from a bone infection, and her mother Jackie admitted she was hoping he had a “healing kiss”.

She said: “I hope it helps with her healing, maybe he’s got the healing kiss. I don’t think she’ll remember but certainly we’ll keep reminding her of it.”

The Los Angeles Galaxy player - who was in the country to play against soccer team Melbourne Victory - also met with doctors, one of whom was wearing an England shirt from the 1990s which he asked the sportsman to sign.

Commenting on the visit, David admitted it was a “good trip” and he was glad to put a “smile” on the faces of the children.

He told NineMSN: “It’s one of the best things I love to do. I’m an ambassador for UNICEF and me and my wife have our own charities as well. Going to see the kids, going to see their smiles, giving them a smile, it’s something that I do believe heals and gives them that little bit of happiness. It was a good trip.

“It’s heart-wrenching. I don’t know how the parents do it at times. It’s an amazing hospital, it’s beautiful. They’re doing such great things, it’s really incredible.”PTI

Germany can reach WCup semifinals: Beckenbauer

News4u-Sports Desk-Erasmia (South Africa), (AP) Franz Beckenbauer believes Germany’s young team can reach the World Cup semifinals.

The absence of injured captain Michael Ballack does not have to be a disadvantage, Beckenbauer said, adding that the star-free squad is very balanced.

“I am positive, the Germans are among the favorites,” Beckenbauer said after visiting the team’s base outside Pretoria today. “With a bit of luck I expect them in the semifinals.”

Beckenbauer won the World Cup as captain and player in 1974 and was the coach of the German team when it won the last of its three world titles in 1990.

The Germans, who were runners-up in 2002 and semifinalists four years ago at home, have arrived with their second youngest World Cup team ever, with the average age just under 25. Ballack and four other players have been ruled out with injuries.

Stadium stampede a warning for World Cup: Blatter

News4u-News Desk-FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the South African stadium stampede that left a policeman seriously injured is like a wake-up call to warn World Cup organizers.

Blatter said FIFA regretted Sunday’s incident at the World Cup warmup between Nigeria and North Korea, which left 16 people injured outside Makhulong Stadium in the township of Tembisa near Johannesburg.

“I am sure, and you are sure, that this is like an alarm clock and this will not happen at any match at the World Cup,” Blatter said after a two-day meeting of FIFA’s executive committee.

“The security is always a matter for the state where the sport event is played. The FIFA organization, with all its ramifications, we have no police force. We cannot even take out a spectator from a stadium. We cannot do that. It is not possible.

David Beckham’s pampered pooch

News4u-Entertainment Desk-Agencies-Soccer star David Beckham spent 2,000 pounds flying his dog back to Los Angeles from London.

The footballer was given the British Bulldog puppy by his wife Victoria as the couple and their three sons celebrated Christmas at their UK home, Contactmusic reported.

But as the family now reside in Beverly Hills, where David plays soccer for the Los Angeles Galaxy, they needed to make sure the pooch got back safely, so the couple splashed out 2,000 pounds on making sure he flew back in luxury, News of the World newspaper reported.

“It’s one lucky animal, but David only wants the best,” a source said.

They handed over the cash to the UK’s exclusive pet transportation company, PetAir, where their ‘Gold Standard’ service includes an airline ticket, custom-made wooden travel container with bedding and water, a pre-travel health examination and one night in the care of a vet.

Before being flown back to the US, the dog had spent time with David and Victoria’s friends, TV chef Gordon Ramsay and his wife Tana, where he was treated to exquisite meals including Aberdeen Angus mincemeat with Lincolnshire sausage.

“In its very short life, David’s dog has already seen the kind of luxury it will enjoy. It’s been fed by the UK’s leading star chef, and has now been flown in total comfort to Los Angeles,” the source added.

Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 in I-league

News4u-Sports Desk,Kolkata, Mohun Bagan today crossed a hurdle on their way to regain the title as they beat Mohammedan Sporting by a solitary first-half goal in an absorbing 15th round match of ONGC I League soccer championship at Salt Lake stadium.
The goal was smartly netted by skillful Bagan medio James Singh in the early first half.

With this victory Bagan maintained the top position in the league table with 33 points, two points ahead of their nearest rival Sporting Clube de Goa.

The green and maroon also set a new record of winning ten matches on the trot.

Mohammedan Sporting remained at the last but one position with 13 points.

The match between any two of the three Kolkata giants is always a very keen affair irrespective of their position in the league table. Tonight’s tie also proved so as both the teams forced a number of raids on the rival forts alternately.

The Bagan defenders, specially Dipak Mondal and their medio Rakesh Mashi played well to foil quite a few Mohammedan moves while their medio Ishfaq Ahmed fed their strikers duo Baichung and Barreto with fine passes.

India go down 1-2 to Hong Kong in soccer friendly

News4u-Sports Desk,Hong Kong, India let in an injury time goal to go down 1-2 against Hong Kong in their international friendly at the Hong Kong Stadium here today.
In a closely fought match, both the sides could not score in the first half but produced three goals in the last 20 minutes.

India were the better side in the first session which saw most of the play in Hong Kong half. But the home side came back strongly in the second half to take the lead and then sneaked in a last gasp goal to emerge victorious.

Mid-fielder Yiu Chung Au Yeung opened scoring for Hong Kong in the 70th minute before India captain Baichung Bhutia made it 1-1 10 minutes later.

But it was the home team which had the last laugh with defender Ng Wai Chiu finding the target in the 94th minute to seal the victory.

The result is a huge disappointment for India considering that Hong Kong are 10 places below them at 152 and Bob Houghton’s boys have already made it to the 2011 Asian Cup after winning the AFC Challenge Cup in August last.

This is the first international match for India after winning the AFC Challenge Cup and they began the year with a loss to a lower-ranked team.

The two sides had drawn 2-2 when they met for a friendly in February 2006.

India started off on an aggressive note and with some good moves kept the opponents’ defence at the backfoot. They, however, failed to convert the chances that came their way in the first session.

Soccer-United looking to join Barcelona in knockout stage

News4u-News Desk,Madrid, Nov 5 - Holders Manchester United can join Barcelona in the knockout stage of the Champions League with victory at Celtic on Wednesday, while Bayern Munich and Arsenal also have a chance to qualify for the last 16.
Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Basel on Tuesday but both the Primera Liga leaders and Sporting Lisbon went through after the Portuguese side beat Shakhtar Donetsk.
A win for Manchester United would send them through with two games to spare if AaB Alborg fail to beat Villarreal in Denmark and a draw would be enough if the Spaniards win.
Bayern, who head Group F on seven points ahead of Lyon on five, travel to third-placed Fiorentina, who have two points.
In Group G, injury-plagued leaders Arsenal will go through if they beat last-placed Fenerbahce at the Emirates but will miss striker Emmanuel Adebayor and defenders Emmanuel Eboue and William Gallas, who are all out with injury.
Nine-times European champions Real Madrid welcome back striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and defender Pepe from injury to help avenge their 2-1 defeat at Juventus two weeks ago when they play the Italians at the Bernabeu.(Reuters)

Ronaldo named FifPro World Footballer of the Year

News4u-News Desk,London, Oct 28 - Manchester winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been named FifPro World Footballer of the Year.

The Portugal international, who is also the favourite to be named European and FIFA World Player of the Year, has been chosen for the award by thousands of professional footballers across more than 40 associations.

Ronaldo, who is also expected to scoop the Balon D”Or and FIFA World Player of the Year award, admits he is keen to remain at Old Trafford, The Sun reported.

“I insist that I am a Manchester United player and now I think that next year I will continue here,” he said.

Ronaldo was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in the summer and at times his body language has suggested he would prefer to be in Spain. But the winger insists United boss Alex Ferguson is the main reason why he still pulls on a red shirt.

“He has been a key person. I respect him a lot because it was him who signed me and he has played a very important part in all that I have won. In Lisbon I reached an agreement with him and it was decided that the best thing for all was to continue,” Ronaldo said.

“He listened to my arguments and I listened to his. Now I understand that it was the correct decision. I am with Manchester United body and soul,” he added. (ANI)
