New ISI chief shares tenuous link with Shah Rukh Khan

News4u-News Desk- ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s new ISI chief, Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam, is the nephew of Indian National Army hero Shah Nawaz Khan and through him, shares a tenuous link with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.

Islam’s father served as a brigadier in the Pakistan Army and Shah Nawaz Khan, who was a major general in the INA led by Subhas Chandra Bose, was his uncle, leading Pakistani defence analyst Ikram Sehgal told PTI.

“One son of Shah Nawaz Khan went with him at the time of Partition, while another, Mahmood Nawaz, stayed on in Pakistan and became a full colonel. In fact, Mahmood Nawaz went and met his father only after retirement as he could not travel to India while he was in service,” Sehgal said, providing details of the new ISI chief’s extended family.

Shah Rukh Khan’s late mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Shah Nawaz Khan, according to the Bollywood star’s biography on several websites.

Islam, who was yesterday appointed the new head of the powerful spy agency by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, comes from a military family and was born in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. It could not immediately be ascertained whether Islam had ever met Shah Nawaz Khan, who died in 1983.

Shah Nawaz Khan was himself born at Kahuta and served in the British Indian Army during World War II. He was captured when Japanese troops overran Singapore in 1942 and then joined the INA. He subsequently fought alongside Japanese forces against the British in Burma (now Myanmar).

Shah Nawaz Khan was captured by the British and put on trial with other INA officers in 1946. They were convicted for treason but were discharged due to intense pressure from the public.

He later joined the Congress party and was elected to the Lok Sabha four times. Before Islam’s appointment as the ISI chief, some media reports had suggested that Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan’s uncle Maj Gen Isfandyar Ali Khan Pataudi, a deputy director general in the spy agency, was in the running for the top slot. However, sources told PTI that Pataudi was never seen as a serious contender for the post of ISI chief.PTI

Amitabh, Shah Rukh Khan turn Italian superheroes

News4u - Entertainment Desk : Amitabh Bachchan is a bearded Supermanand Shah Rukh wears the red and blue costume of Spider Man. The two Bollywood stars are not part of a new superhero flick, instead these ‘avatars’ are the imagination of an Italian pop artist. The Bollywood toys, a trio of Amitabh, Shah Rukh and Anil Kapoor, by David Cesaria are part of the first ever exhibition of Italian neo-pop art in the country.

After a show in Mumbai, the exhibition titled ‘Dadaumpop’ is on show in Delhi and curator Igor Zanti, says that India, with it’s colours and characters, is the spiritual home of all things pop.

Zanti commisioned Cesaria to spend a year in India to come up with a special work on the country and the 3D installations are now the special attraction at the exhibition, which has been put together in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy.

Zanti, who put together the collection, which includes a bust of a draq queen titled ‘Mr Prinetti’, a collection of black and white potraits of Disney characters by a 75-year-old, among others, says that the exhibition is a sort of homecoming, as the second wave of pop art originated in Asia. “The first pop movement began in Europe and I consider French artiste Marcel Duchamp the father of pop art. From Europe it went to the US where Andy Warhol became a cult name. And the second movement began in Asia, especially Japan. And India is a huge influence on pop artistes across the world. The Indian aesthetic is at it’s core pop,” said Zanti.

Be it Bollywood, it’s festivals or its gods, Indian culture is full of the elements that make pop-art distinctive, said Zanti. “Pop art distinguishes itself with the use of colour and India is such a colourful country. Bollywood and it’s heroes and heroines also have the same over-the-top aesthetic as the genre,” said Zanti.

But for those who think that the genre is just about colour and cartoons, Zanti points out that pop art emerged as a form of social commentary. “Pop art is a political form of art. It’s about irony,” said Zanti pointing to a painting by artist Teresa Morelli, showing a male version of the Disney princess Snow White biting into a transgenic apple. “It’s a comment on the dangers of genetically modified food and how it can affect our health and society,” explained Zanti.

The exhibition which was inaugurated by the Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforto, the Ambassador of Italy to India, will be open to the public for two weeks at the Italian Culture Centre in New Delhi. SCREEN

SRK to turn Don against Leonardo DiCaprio!

News4u - Entertainment Desk : If all goes well, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will be seen sharing screen space with his Hollywood counterpart Leonardo DiCaprio in a cross-cultural thriller ‘Xtreme City’, a tale about two men from radically different worlds.

SRK’s biographer (Still Reading Khan) and screenplay writer Mushtaq Sheikh has penned the script with Hollywood writer-director Paul Schrader, who will direct thismovie.

American filmmaker Martin Scorsese has come on board as a producer with David Weisman for the movie, where SRK will essay the role of an underworld gangster while DiCaprio will be playing a New York cop.

Sheikh said ‘Xtreme City’ is not in anyway a traditional gangster movie. “Its a different kind of film…one where both Indian and American protagonists are balanced human beings who the story treats in their full complexity, and at no point in either culture ever dimished or taken for granted. Its a cross-cultural thriller designed for both Bollywood and Hollywood. And if we get it right..this will be an attempt at true global entertainment,” Sheikh said.

To a question on the title of the film, he said Paul Schrader titles have always been two-worded that express the script’s metaphor.. like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, American Gigolo, Blue Collar, Hard CORE. “This should have ideally been Maximum City but that was already taken courtesy the book. We needed another name..that’s when Paul decided on Xtreme City because majority of the film is based in Mumbai and no other word catches the enigma of the city like Xtreme City. After all Mumbai is a city of extreme ‘extremes’!!!,” he said.

Sheikh said the idea of this project was born last year when SRK met Weisman, Scorsese, Schrader and DiCaprio at the Berlin International Film Festival.

He said ‘Xtreme City’ is the story of two men from radically different worlds, one an Indian and the other American. Both served in the UN peacekeeping force in Somalia during the 1990s. The American saves the Indian’s life then brings him home, in the aftermath they became indebted to each other.. then go their own separate ways.

“The American becomes a cop in New York, the Indian a bhai in Mumbai. Many years later, the American has a burdensome family obligation, which compels him to return to India to seek help from the Indian comrade whose life he had saved..but becomes deeper and deeper drawn into an alien world,” Sheikh said.

The scriptwriter said ‘Xtreme City’ deals with a promise that was given between two men of different cultures and how the sense of duty can transcend everything. “The story has a very emotional essence. In the end, the two protagonists come to understand each other as they never anticipated might be possible,” he added.

According to Sheikh, the film dwells on the gritty realities and obstacles they encounter along the path of their voyage of growth. It is also about “farz” or duty towards each other which bound them together in the first place.

“This is a pre-dominantly desi concept that to my knowledge has never been played out before on the screen, in true emotional terms, between an Indian and a foreigner, certainly never been attempted on a top tier international icon star level,” Shiekh pointed out.

He said he was roped in to co-write the film by Weisman and Schrader while in Berlin. “During our interactions, we became a desi-american family. I am delighted and at the same time awestruck by this because they accept with such graciousness and eagerness all the criticism I have to offer whenever something arises that is foreign to the Hindustani sensibility,” he added.

Shiekh said after the Berlin meeting, both SRK and Martin had very busy years filled with previous work commitments. Shah Rukh got busy with Ra.one and Don 2, Martin with his 3D film Hugo Cabret which kept him busy in London from Last May till late January this year. “As he became free, Martin re-read the script and got in touch with us here about working together. As of now, the script in done (ready and bound)..the director is all set for the film and the producer is on board. The rest only time and destiny will unfold! “, Shiekh said.

He was tight lipped about finalising the rest of the cast. SCREEN

Re-charged

News4u - Entertainment Desk : Shah Rukh Khan is gung-ho about getting back on TV to host the desi version of reality game show Wipe Out.

From hosting quiz shows to anchoring an adventure show, what prompted the shift?
I still love quizzing and do it with my children every day at the dining-table. Just this morning I asked them a few questions and realised that they are smarter than me. I have hosted two big quiz shows Kaun Banega Crorepati and Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai?. Even today, if somebody offers me one, I will do it, but shows have moved ahead and I am told quiz shows don’t do well anymore. Also, this year I want to have fun and make people happy. Zor Ka Jhatka Total Wipe Out is a semi-reality kind of a show. You know, I used to watch Telematch, in which people are trying to overcome different obstacles and it was fun to watch them. As far as Wipe Out is concerned, I had watched a couple of episodes earlier when I was abroad and I watched it recently when Imagine offered the show to me. I thought it was a funny game-show, which the entirefamily can watch together. Also, I have a sense of humour which I will be able to give vent to.

How will your role as a host pan out in the show?
I am the storyteller, anchor, narrator and commentator of the show. The tasks undertaken by participants are hilarious. It’s not right to say this, but when somebody slips on a banana peel, it is funny. I would say I am participating in a sweetly-nasty show.

Takeshi’s Castle, a show similar to yours is being aired on Pogo and has Jaaved Jafferi’s funny comments.

(Cuts in) I know, I have seen the show. Jaaved is naturally funny, I don’t know whether I can do comedy like that. However, there’s a big difference between our shows. While that show is already done and dubbed in Hindi with Javed’s voiceover, I have a live participation and there is interaction with participants. In terms of scale too, Wipe Out is bigger.

For those who have already watched the original version on AXN, what will be the attraction of your show?
Basically, shows of this kind are successful because everytime you see the participant, it is funny in a different way. Also, since the language spoken is closer home, it will appeal to the audience. You have an anchor, who is known and so there will be an interest.

Will you be doing any of the stunts?
No. I told them while signing the contract I don’t want to do it and if I do so, I don’t want anybody to see it. But yes, I have had water thrown on me for the promo just to get a feel of what the particpants will be going through.

Is it true that your contract with Star prohibited you from doing other TV shows?
I didn’t have a contract as such. But, yes, 12 episodes of Paanchvi Pass were left to be shot because of the Indian Premier League. So, I offered to return the money to Star but they refused. Uday (Shankar, CEO Star) is a good friend of mine and I share a personal relationship with him. Since they refused to take the money, I felt morally obligated to stay away from TV for sometime. Also I was injured. TV is here to stay and rightly or wrongly I believe I am here to stay, too.

You had revived Fauji and even shot for it. What went wrong then?
I have a lot of good memories of the serial and wanted to do it well. We shot one and a halfepisode but we fell short of recapturing it. Also, the times have changed and somehow it didn’t feel right. It was to be aired on Colors but I discussed it with them and we mutually decided to shelve it.

What is the news about you acquiring the rights for Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. Wasn’t Ghar Ki Baat Hai on the lines of the iconic sitcom?
I don’t helm the television part of it, I have a Red Chillies Idiot Box team looking after it. Ghar Ki Baat Hai was on the lines of Yeh Jo.. and I have been told Imagine is going to revive Ghar Ki… Idiot Box has also got another nice show Ishaan and recently have made Parindey. I saw it and it looks very good.

This year we have seen many star-driven shows on TV. How do you feel about competition and comparision?
Comparisons have always been there. Whenever there’s a newcomer I am compared, if someone gives a bigger hit or a lesser one then there are comparisions. However, I don’t believe in that. Having spent 20 years in the industry, with a lot of integrity and honesty, these thoughts never come to me. Today, I have everything a man could ask for. In a pompous way it is wrong to say I am incomparable but not wrong to say don’t compare me. With all humility I can say, all the stars, film or TV, are doing good entertainment and there’s no competition, all of us are working hard.

What is your take on reality shows?
All reality shows have a similar format. It is about putting somebody in an extraordinary situation and living off their awkwardness of facing the truth, fear, not knowing any answer, crossing a funny obstacle or making an idiot of oneself. However, I think I can bring better entertainment. People say I am Bollywood ka badshah, but I am bedroom ka badshah. I am not being vulgar, but in our culture TV is watched by the entire family and my show will appeal to everyone.

These days abusive language and offensive behaviour have become an integral part of reality shows.
First and foremost, I am a family person and I have many responsibilities towards my family. I will never do anything nasty and will try and stop if someone is doing it. I am all for entertainment, love and relationships. I may make fun of others but in a dignified way, there will be no ghatiyapan or badmaashi. I am shocked and taken aback when I hear these things.

What has been your zor ka jhatka?
On the pleasant side, it’s my beautiful children and on the unpleasant side, it’s been my injuries. I haven’t spoken about my last injury which happened when I was trying to jump over Sushmita Sen for a scene. She is so tall and here I was like a hero jumping over her and it was embarrassing to have a fall. It was a little pleasure but a lot of pain!

Recently you met Madhuri Dixit on the sets of another reality show. What was the feeling?
Fantastic! I spent two hours with Madhuri, we spoke about our children. She is shooting in Mumbai’s Filmistan Studios and whenever I am there, I will trouble her. I think great acting stops at the count of ek do teen and that’s Madhuri. She is beautiful and I will be happy if she does a guest appearance in my film.

Are you doing Sajid Nadiadwala’s film with Vishal Bhardwaj?
Yes, I am in talks with Sajid and Vishal is working on the script though things have to be finalised yet.

On Koffee With Karan, you apparently said that you can never say sorry to anyone?
What I meant was that while I am an outgoing person in public, in private I am shy and reclusive. I cannot express joy, sorrow, anger or apology. And when I said I cannot apologise, I didn’t say it with pride, I meant I cannot express it. SCREEN

God resides in man’s heart, not in man-made houses: SRK

News4u-Entertainment Desk-agencies-Shahrukh Khan believes that God resides in man’s heart and not in man made houses for Him.

“Allah, God, Bhagwan in whichever name we pray to the supreme power by, resides in man’s heart, not in man-made houses for Him,” SRK wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

His comments come ahead of the Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid title suit verdict, which has been deferred by a week with Supreme Court deciding to hear the plea for postponement on September 28.

“I mean first our beliefs should take seed and grow in our hearts and then only we should manifest that in places of prayer and God,” the actor tweeted.

I hope we Indians realise how difficult it is to build stadiums and respect.. and so easy to break monuments and disrespect each others beliefs, he added.

Several Bollywood personalities including Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Madhur Bhandarkar and Sajid Khan have come ahead and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in view of the impending judgement.
