A Face that Time Can Never Erase From Memory

Meena Kumari

News4u Feature- Veera Chaturvedi - I have a picture (cut out from some old magazine) of a four year old girl sleeping peacefully on a sofa with perhaps her father in the film, sitting nearby watching over her.

The girl was Meena Kumari who had to step in to the world of grownups at the tender age of four. I feel that the picture I have, was her last peaceful sleep Meena enjoyed till 27th of March, years ago, when she breathed her last.

We remember Meena Kumari every year on this very day, listening to her poetry, watching her films and going through the songs and dances. , she portrayed on the silver screen. However this is not the only time we remember Meena Kumari. A new Heroine in her wish for successful leading lady wants to essay roles that Meenaji did long ago. Can you think of Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam without thinking of Choti Bahu that came to life on the silver screen through Meena Kumari and became one with her. Raveena Tandon tried her hand on the role but could not match the legend in any scene. Whenevr an actress excels in her role, we think of Meena Kumari.

sahib bibi aur ghulam & Choti Bahu

I also remember Meena Kumari a slim & very beautiful Meena, eating a raw Mango and making faces at her co-star Kishore Kumar, hardly any one remembers a film named Ilzam where this s called unmatched Jodi did a lot of Dhamaal.

Meena could do anything . She could star in Kohinoor a most unbelievable comedy with the Tragedy King Dilip Kumar. In the same way she could sit silently for hours with her expressive eyes speaking to an equally quiet Dilip Kumar in Footpath. The way she spoke her dialogues in Pakiza , they keep ringing in our years long after the film is over. She lamented that in her long career she did quite a few films with Dilip Kumar, they were even Hits, but for her they were just mediocre attempts at entertainment. Azad, Kohinoor were fantasies and Footpath was above the common grasp. Only Yahoodi was memorable for the performances of both.

Pakeeza - Yahudi - Sharada.

Meena is accused of being a nymphomaniac, the one who was in love with herself and sorrow, who just could not stick to one man and drank like a fish. Lots and lots have been said about her. She had a crush on Bharat Bhushan, her co-star in the Jubilee Hit Baiju Bawara. This relation had no future as Bharat Bhushan was already married. She married Kamaal Amrohi, gave his sons the love of a mother, but the relationship did not last. They separated but before breathing her llst , Meena Kumari alias Mehjabeen, presented Kamaal & the world with the greats hit of our times. Inspite of being ill and almost subsisting on medicenes she gave her fans and the director, producer of Pakiza a film to remember forever.

Baiju Bawra - Bahu Begam

She was paired with Raj Kapoor in Sharda an extra ordinary tale of the star crossed loves, where the girl is forced by circumstances to become her love’s step mother. Meena lived the role. She was Paired with Ashok Kumar in Parineeta, Bheegi Raat, Ek Hi Raasta and many more. With Pradeep Kumar in Bahu Begum and a few other films. Raj Kumar , Rajendra Kumar, Devanand, Sunil Dutt and even with Mahipal and Gurudutt, she was at ease and gave the performance  an elfin touch of which she was a master. Meena Kumari wrote memorable poetry and under Khayyam’s direction recited them beautifully for her fans. She had a voice as expressive as her eyes and the curly lock that strayed out of her long hair to hang on her beautiful face.

Ek Hi Raasta - Parineeta - Bhegee Raat.

They still remember her

News4u Entertainment Desk- Veera -The different organizations along with our own ‘Sarkari Mahakma” never fails to surprise us. This year the Padmshree was awarded to the great musician Khyyam as if he was a contemporary of Vishal & Shekhar. It was an out & out insult to the great composer but whims of Sarkari Officials has to be tolerated with a straight face.

In the same vein the Superstar of yester years Nimmi was honored with an award at the annual great Woman Award along with Rani Mukherjee and Raveena Tandon etc.

The tragedy of it all was that when Nimmi’s name was announced people asked each other – ‘ is she still alive”. Yet Nimmi was a popular and successful actress of the Fifties & Sixties. Film buffs have not forgotten the dreamy eyed beauty with her face framed in restless curls swinging away “Jiya Bekaraar Hai” in Raj Kapoor’s Blockbuster ‘Barsaat”. People claimed that the new girl looked even more charming than the ever beautiful “Nargis”.

Nimmi gave a lot of hit films like ‘Saza” with Dev Anand ; Daag, Aan, Amar & Udan Khatola with Dilip Kumar ; Basant Bahaar with Bharat Bhushan. She starred with almost all the top heroes of that time and had a long fan following. One of her later films “Shama” saw her over shadowing the lovely Suraiya who has by that time past her prime.

In the late sixties she was seen in Mere Mehboob as Ashok Kumar’s lady love and after that she married the lyricist and writer Mehdi Ali Raza and retired from films. Her last film as heroine was K. Asif’s- Love & God opposite Sanjeev Kumar.

Nimmi herself writes poetry and used to recite at private sittings in her husky voice to admiring fans. It was heartening to see her again in the news. We hope others like her will also be remembered. Nalini Jaywant who recently died unwept unsung surely deserved this award, but as Meena Kumari said- “Har shakhs ki kismet main Inaam Nahi hota”.

Its not every one’s good fortune to be remembered for what they do…..

Big B to hold special screening of ‘Paa’ for Dilip Kumar

News4u-Entertainment Desk-Agencies-Mega star Amitabh Bachchan

is planning to organise a special screening of ‘Paa’ for Bollywood

legend Dilip Kumar, who will not be able to attend the star-studded premiere due to ill health.

Bachchan, 67, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the film’s premiere is a resounding success and has invited a host of Bollywood celebrities including names like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, Hemamalini, Jeetendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.

“Dilip Saheb is unwell as are Shammiji, Shashiji and Dharamji…but speaking to them after such a while was a joy and an accomplishment in itself,” Bachchan wrote about his phone conversation with the veterans ahead of the event.

“Dilip Saheb gave his characteristic laugh when I told him I was playing Abhishek’s son…I would keep a separate trial for him where he does not have to worry about the crowd and the rush of the media,” said Bachchan, who plays a 13-year-old child suffering from progeria in the movie, releasing tomorrow.

“Sunny and Bobby confirm they shall be there. Vinod Khanna calls in sends wishes for success. Hemaji acknowledges and will be there as will Jeetendra and the list goes on,” he added.

Bachchan was at the venue IMAX multiplex in suburban Wadala since wee hours today to check on the last minute preparation for the premiere.

“I have asked all the team to assemble by 1 am…Getting over 1600 people to follow instructions can be a night mare,” Bachchan said.

Expressing his anxiety, the megastar wrote that one of the most trying tasks in organizing an event, if it is an invited audience, is the allocation of seats.

“Where? Whom? When? Why? Just an endless flow of questions that keep changing their answers every few minutes.

Dealing with each request, each preference, is a job most diplomats would find difficult to handle. The end result is a nightmare operation day in and day out, right to the very last minute,” he said.
