Pollution causes birth defects rise in China

News4u-News Desk-The number of newborns with birth defects in many parts of China is rising rapidly as women have children later in life and environmental pollution takes its toll.

There have been number of studies and reports over the years suggesting China’s pollution dire for infants causing congenital heart disease, physical defects et al.

As per the latest reports that are coming in to signify no reversal trend and escalation, on the contrary, of birth defects in many parts of China due to environmental pollution.

In Beijing, the rate of physical abnormalities, such as congenital heart defects or cleft lips last year was recorded some 170 per 10,000 births, nearly double to that was recorded in 1997.

Beijing municipal health bureau is of the view that the higher rate of abnormalities was the result of better diagnostic techniques and monitoring capabilities, as well as women having children later in life.

To present a grim picture of reality, China’s reproductive health institute put across the root cause of problems as chemical and toxic emissions.

“Chemical and toxic emissions impact the health of the parents, so it is likely they also impact the health of an unborn baby,” Ren Aiguo, director of the reproductive health institute at Peking University, was quoted as saying.

Environmental pollution could also be contributing to the problem. A study conducted in 2007 carried out in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi, demonstrated abundance of fine particles in the air as one of the leading factors contributing in spontaneous abortion, birth defects, and infant death.

The number of birth defects in many parts of the country has also increased.

In the southern province of Guangdong, a major industrial hub, the birth defect rate rose from 186 per 10,000 births in 2003 to 249 four years later.
