PV Sindhu wins Malaysian Masters final

News4u-Sports Desk-PV Sindhu, put up a fine performance against Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in the final of Malaysia Masters to clinch the title in straight sets with the score reading 21-15 and 21-9.

This is Sindhu’s second Malaysia Masters title. She had emerged triumphant in 2013.

Sindhu started the match decently, winning some crucial points, and gradually got into her rhythm, after which she did not allow Gilmour to come back in the set.

Sindhu proved too powerful for the Scottish shuttler, who had come into the final with a 1-0 head-to-head record against her.

Gilmour came up with a much more determined effort in the second set and started well as the scores were tied at 5-5 at one point but that was the best she could muster as Sindhu took a huge lead and ran away with the set, which finished 21-9 in favour of the Indian.

This is the most bizarre run out ever!

News4u-Sports Desk- Somebody needs to tell Adam Zampa that cricket is not a contact sport as the Melbourne Stars bowler was lucky not to lose a few teeth during Saturday’s Big Bash clash against Melbourne Renegades.

The leg-spinner was bowling to Renegades batsman Darren Bravo in the 13th over of the match, when the batsman hit the delivery straight back down the pitch.

The ball collided with Peter Nevill’s bat, who was standing at the non-striker’s end, only to get diverted at the face of Zampa who was trying to field the delivery, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

After hitting Zampa’s nose, the ball bounced directly and knocked the bails off the stumps, dismissing Nevill, who had no time to return back into the crease.

Good for the 23-year-old leggie that he appeared relatively unhurt after being hit in the face, receiving treatment for a bloodied and potentially broken nose.

The incident drew a lot of fans to Twitter to make light of the young spin bowler’s unfortunate injury. (ANI)

Amla century frustrates England at Cape Town

News4u-Sports Desk- South Africa captain Hashim Amla’s unbeaten 157 gave his side a fighting chance on Day Three of the second Test against England here at Newlands.

Having started the day at 64, Amla batted the entire day and frustrated the visitors as they were able to pick only one wicket on Monday in Cape Town.

Resuming the day on 141-2, the 32-year-old added another 127 runs with AB de Villiers who was removed by Steven Finn for 88, Sport24 reported.

The right-handed batsman, who had not passed 50 since January 2015 and having not carded a century since December 2014, had come into the match under tremendous pressure.

That pressure was increased by many folds after the visitors destroyed their bowling and declared after scoring a mammoth first inning score of 629/6.

At stumps on Day Three, the hosts were 353 for 3, still trailing by a huge margin of 276 runs.

Earlier, Ben Stokes, who had smashed 258 runs, including 30 boundaries and 11 sixes, broke the record of the fastest 250 in Test match history.

England are currently leading the four-match Test series 1-0 following their 241-run win over the hosts in the opening match in Durban. (ANI)

Zidane set to replace Benitez as Real head: reports

News4u-Sports Desk- If reports are to be believed, then under-fire Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez could soon be sacked by the Spanish giants, just seven months after taking the charge.

The Spanish media outlets have reported that Benitez’s sacking will be made official in the coming hours with club’s reserve team coach Zinedine Zidane to take over.

Madrid were unable to take advantage of the lead and ultimately played a 2-2 draw against Valencia on Sunday, leaving Benitez’s men four points adrift of local rivals Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, Sport24 reported.

Benitez’s appointment in June was not largely accepted, neither by the fans or the club’s star players, who wanted his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti to stay.

The relationship of the 55-year-old with the dressing room had also been not that good, with key players such as Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez often showing their repulsion at being substituted.

Zidane had earlier quashed speculations that he was going to replace Benitez as the team coach, saying that he is still in a learning process when it comes to coaching a senior team.

The Frenchman, however, had earlier stated his desire to coach the senior team of Real Madrid. (ANI)

Kohli named Cricketer of the Year’; Mithali Raj picked for women’s top award

News4u-Sports Desk-Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has been selected for ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award 2015, while Mithali Raj was picked for the top women’s award in the BCCI annual honours to be given away on 5th January in Mumbai.

The 27-year-old batsman, who took over as captain in the middle of the tour of Australia after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sudden retirement, delivered some good results under his leadership.

Under Kohli, the Indian team ended a 22-year wait for a series win on Sri Lankan soil before battering world No.1 South Africa to give them their first overseas loss in nine years.

Kohli has done well and scored 640 runs in 15 Test innings. In his 20 ODI outings this year, Kohli managed to make 623 runs.

Mithali, on the other hand, became the first Indian woman and second overall to complete 5,000 runs in ODI format this year.

Mithali will be presented with the M A Chidambaram Trophy for the best women’s cricketer.

In other awards, former wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani will be presented the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ashwin ends stellar year as top-ranked Test bowler

News4u-Sports Desk- Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has finished a spectacular year on a high note, achieving the number-one spot for first time in his career in the latest ICC Test rankings on Thursday.

Ashwin has become the first India bowler since Bishen Bedi in 1973 to achieve the milestone, finishing 2015 as the most successful bowler with 62 wickets in nine Tests, and this is reflected in his ranking after he started the year in 15th position and slowly but surely moved to the top of the chart.

Dale Steyn had started the Durban Test leading Ashwin by four points and now trails the India off-spinner by the same margin.

Ashwin said, “Finishing the year as the number-one ranked Test bowler is like an icing on the cake that I have managed to build over the past last 12 months. I always wanted to get there one day. “There can’t be a better way to finish the 2015.

“Replicating what Mr Bedi did is something I am very proud of. The former India captain was a master at his craft and I am very humbled to follow in his footsteps.”

Meanwhile, Australia captain Steve Smith leapfrogged Kane Williamson of New Zealand, England’s Joe Root and AB de Villiers of South Africa into the top spot with unbeaten knocks of 134 and 70 in Melbourne.

Smith, who was also named in the ICC Test and ODI Teams of the Year, is the third Australia batsman in the last decade after Ricky Ponting (2005 and 2006) and Michael Clarke (2012) to finish the year as the number-one ranked batsman.

Ashwin, for the second time in three years, also finished as the number-one ranked Test all-rounder. (ANI)

Pacquiao set to fight Timothy Bradley on return to ring

News4u-Sports Desk- Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao is reportedly set to return to the ring in April for the first time since losing the mega-bout against Floyd Mayweather this year.

Pacquiao, who has won world titles in eight different weight classes, had undergone corrective surgery to fix his torn rotator cuff sustained months before the fight against Mayweather.

Talking about the bout, Promoter Bob Arum said that the 36-year-old would fight against Timothy Bradley for the third time at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Meanwhile, Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said that the bout was not officially confirmed, but added that the two fighters had agreed to the proposal and would be signing the agreement soon.

However, it was still doubtful whether the fight against Bradley would be marked as Pacquiao’s last fight.

The Filipino boxer had earlier expressed that he would return to the ring for one last fight before retiring to concentrate on a political career. (ANI)

Australia win 2nd test by 177 runs against West Indies

News4u-Sports Desk-Australia win the 2nd test by 177 runs and series against West Indies 2 nil.

Australia worked their way through the West Indies for a victory that kept the Frank Worrell Trophy in their possession for 20 unbroken years, stretching back to the triumph of Mark Taylor’s team in the Caribbean in 1995.

Having fought hard over the final two days of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, the West Indies lost their final four wickets for 32 in 10 overs, allowing Steven Smith’s team to enjoy success inside four days after they declared before play began to set Jason Holder’s men a target of 460.

With the benefit of more time in Australia, the visitors put up a better show than they managed in Hobart, though the hosts were never in any danger of losing the match.

It was more a question of time, and Holder was despondent at a checked drive to mid off that opened up the tail to the second new ball with a handful of overs remaining.

Mitchell Marsh claimed that wicket, and it was his impact fast medium that did the majority of the damage for Smith.

Spinner Nathan Lyon was named man-of-the-match after taking seven wickets, including a valuable 3-85 in the second innings on a stubborn MCG wicket that refused to deteriorate late even deep into day four.
