Playing It Cool (Movie Review)

News4u-Entertainment Desk- A romcom narrated from a guy’s point of view, the film captures a script writer’s (Chris Evans) transformation from being cynical about love since his mother abandoned him as a child, to a lovelorn Romeo, completely besotted with an enigmatic woman (Michelle Monaghan). He finally finds ‘the one’, but does love find him?

The protagonist (Evans aka Capt. America) is a writer, who must produce a romantic script for a film but struggles to do so as he is skeptical about the concept of ‘true love’. So he decides to gain perspective by making his friends share their love stories with him. He then visualises himself in those tales, but fails to get inspired. Eventually, as luck would have it, he gets struck by Cupid’s bow and falls for Michelle Monaghan’s character. But there’s a catch — she’s engaged.

A lot like Saif Ali Khan starrer Bollywood film Happy Ending (the Hindi film being more entertaining), Playing it Cool also attempts to defy romantic stereotypes, but ends up succumbing to it. While Evans scores with his movie-star good looks and blue eyes, he is not your quintessential charmer. Suffering from a writer’s block, he blabbers about his anti-love philosophy and recalls his sexcapades, much to the amusement of his jobless friends. Best friend Scott (Topher Grace) tries to knock some sense into him, but in vain. His bizarre imagination lures him into role-play.

While the romance element clicks, the film doesn’t quite work as a comedy. A few one-liners do make you giggle, but that’s that. In fact, the film works as a drama, especially towards the end. We particularly liked how the film draws parallels with Love in the Time of Cholera. Nonetheless, if you are open to watching an unromantic love story and are obsessed with Chris Evans’ smouldering looks, you won’t mind this unconventional ‘guy flick’ about the bad boy and his forbidden love.Courtesy TOI

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai (Movie Review)

News4u-Entertainment Desk- PP aka Pravin Patel (Ram Kapoor), a middle-aged married Gujarati businessman based in Malaysia, has a massive crush on Bollywood superstar Shanaya (Sunny Leone). When a contest is announced about winning a date with her in Kuala Lumpur, he grabs the opportunity to make his dream (of romancing her) come true. He then starts telling lies (lochas) in order to execute his secret plan.

You either have a sense of humour or you don’t. If you try too hard to sound funny, it never works and that’s the case here. If you put together done to death Gujju, Italian and gay people stereotypes, you get Kuch Kuch Locha Hai. Also, since Sunny Leone and Evelyn Sharma have been roped in, some serious skin show is guaranteed. However, despite the addition of these so-called crowd-pulling tactics, the jaded film fails to keep you awake, let alone entertain, as it lacks a decent story and fails on multiple grounds. After all, the concept of young people dressing up as oldies is no longer funny or probably works in plays better.

But the biggest issue with KKLH is its genre. While you assume it’s a sex comedy, which was promoted as a family entertainer, it ends up being neither. Barring the ladies slipping into a bikini every two minutes or flaunting ample cleavage, the film is otherwise too boring to be a sex comedy. Ram Kapoor hams away to glory. Sadly, the film is not even unintentionally funny, except for this one occasion where Leone says, “Looks toh hai but I am ready to show talent.” And she tries to hone that by deciding to stay with a Gujju family (Patel’s) to get into the skin of a Gujju character she is about to play. Sigh.

KKLH is so tedious, inconsequential and long that by the end of it, you feel like you’ve spent days and not hours watching it. It’s brave of the makers to have released it alongside a gem of a film called Piku! Courtesy TOI

Piku (Movie-Review)

News4u-Entertainment Desk- Piku’s father Bhaskor’s obsessed with his health. Piku indulges Bhaskor’s wishes, including a road trip to Calcutta - but what does attractive Rana’s driving set in motion?

Straight up, Piku is delightful, a cinematic rasgulla, dipped in the sweet, dark rum of life. Architect Piku Banerjee (Deepika) is only child to 70-year-old Bhaskor (Amitabh) who obsesses about his health - including creating commotion around his stomach’s motion. Piku’s torn between tenderness for her elderly dad and frustration at being stuck in a rut. Suddenly, Bhaskor wants to visit Calcutta - but insists on travelling from Delhi via road. What happens when intriguing Rana (Irrfan) drives them?

Piku’s performances are superb, topped by one of Amitabh Bachchan’s best acts. Amitabh is mesmerizing as Bhaskor, a man who delights in being “brutal and honest”, but whose eyes are soft as marshmallows when he looks at his daughter.

Bubbling with life, pouring with over-protectiveness, Amitabh runs away with the film, travelling with a ‘commode chair’, stating Indian men want wives only “to sarve food in the day, sex in the night”, interrogating Rana, “Drinking? Driving? Sipping? Taar pore, dhadaam?”, telling his bubbly sister-in-law Chobi (Moushumi, lovely and bright), “Tumko like na karne ka, mere paas hai, hai, reason hai.” From Angry Young Man to eccentric old gent, Piku is another milestone in this amazing actor’s journey.

Alongside, Irrfan’s Rana has a wide-eyed, raised-eyebrow sexiness, but also sensitive balance between being annoyed and intrigued by Piku - and her mad dad. Deepika presents an evolved, polished performance, utterly believable as Piku uptight with pursed lips, whose life expands from reading her dad’s BP - to reading Rana’s eyes.

Piku’s story is stunning. It beautifully explores the most basic bond of life - a parent, a child, a beginning and an end. It looks shyly at love. It smiles tenderly at Bengali flavours, at fish fry and digestion pills, but also at universal stories, of irritating relatives and domestics who look after us until we die.

The direction’s brilliant. Deft, yet deep, Shoojit Sircar presents characters so ordinary, they’re wonderful, people and places intimately intertwined, an aunt pickled in resentment, boats almost painted on a sheet-like Ganga.

With passion, there’s precision too, the editing fish-bone sharp, detailing, down to Bhaskor’s monkey cap, perfect. Some moments evoke Ang Lee’s terrific ‘Eat Drink Man Woman’. Others evoke your and my life. Together, Piku makes you shake with laughter. It also makes your heart cry.

Don’t miss this gentle rollercoaster ride. Piku’s motions and emotions must be enjoyed. courtesy TOI

Jackie Chan warns Singapore youth on drugs after son’s detention

News4u-Entertainment Desk- Jackie Chan was named Singapore’s first celebrity anti-drug ambassador on Thursday and the kung fu movie star sought to warn the city state’s youth off illegal substances as he spoke of his son’s drug crimes.

The Hong Kong actor’s son, Jaycee Chan, was released from a Chinese jail in February after serving a six-month sentence on drugs charges.

He had been formally charged last year with “the crime of sheltering others to take drugs” after testing positive for marijuana and police saying they had found 100 grams of the drug at his Beijing home.

“I would never think it would happen to my family. The day I found out, I am so ashamed, I am so angry. How (did) that happen?” Chan said. “I was very angry but it made me more determined to be against drugs.”

Chan, named an anti-drug ambassador by Beijing in 2009, sought to deter youths who had gathered to see him at the Singapore event from involvement with drugs.

“Don’t ever think you won’t get addicted, because not only are you hurting yourself … your one drug addiction will hurt your family,” the actor said.

“In order to EARN MONEY, you’ll steal, you’ll rob. In the end, you’re hurting your country, you’re hurting your family, you’re hurting your son … it’s a domino effect.”

The younger Chan, a 32-year-old actor and singer, apologised for his actions upon his release. The use of ketamine and methamphetamine has increased in China in recent years and Beijing continues to heavily prosecute marijuana use.Reuters

Salman Khan sentenced to 5 years in jail in 2002 hit-and-run case

News4u-News Desk- Bollywood star Salman Khan was on Wednesday sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty by a court in Mumbai of killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run crash after a night out drinking.

While convicting Khan, sessions court judge DW Deshpande said all the charges against the star, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, had been proved.

The judge said 49-year-old Khan was driving the car at the time of the accident and the defence’s contention that his driver Ashok Singh was at the wheel was not probable.

Khan, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, broke down on hearing the verdict and witnesses said there were tears in his eyes. Khan’s family members too were upset and his two sisters also broke down in the courtroom.

The judge then heard arguments on the quantum of sentence and Khan’s lawyer sought a lesser sentence in view of his humanitarian work. He said the actor had paid Rs 19 lakh as compensation to the victims and would do more if ordered.

“We are not running away from responsibility,” the counsel said. Khan himself pleaded with the judge for a lesser sentence.

The prosecution sought the maximum punishment. Agencies
