Gunmen kill five in Philippine ambush

News4u- News Desk- Gunmen suspected to be Islamic militants ambushed a truck carrying farm workers in the southern Philippines on Wednesday, killing at least five and wounding 10, the military said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack on southern Basilan island, although police and the military said they suspected the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group.

Those killed were poor rubber plantation workers with a local cooperative, Basilan military commander Colonel Ramon Yugyog told reporters.

Basilan is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, a small Islamic militant movement that has been blamed for most of the country’s worst terror attacks as well as the kidnapping of foreigners.

Eat desserts for breakfast, get slim

News4u-News Desk -  Those with a weakness for sweets can now include cookies and cake in a 600 caloriebreakfast menu with some proteins and carbs to shed weight in a pleasurable way and also stay slim.

Attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term, explains Daniela Jakubowicz, professor at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, who led the study.

Over the course of a 32-week-long study, participants who added dessert to their breakfast - cookies, cake, or chocolate - lost an average of 40 pounds more than a group that avoided such foods, the journal Steroids reports.

What’s more, they kept off the pounds longer. A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning, and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance, according to aTel Aviv statement.

And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger, explains Jakubowicz. While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

These findings were based on 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults, who were randomly assigned to one of two diet groups with identical caloric intake - the men consumed 1,600 calories daily and the women 1,400.

However, the first group was given a low carbohydrate diet including a small 300 calorie breakfast, and the second was given a 600 calorie breakfast high in protein and carbohydrates, always including a dessert item (i.e. chocolate).

Halfway through the study, participants in both groups had lost an average of 33 pounds per person. But in the second half of the study, results differed drastically.

The participants in the low-carb group regained an average of 22 pounds each, but participants in the group with a larger breakfast lost another 15 pounds each.

At the end of the 32 weeks, those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 40 pounds more per person than their peers.

Jakubowicz conducted the study with Julio Wainstein and Mona Boaz from Tel Aviv and Oren Froy of Hebrew University Jerusalem.IANS

Britons cash in as ATM pays out double

News4u-News Desk-LONDON: Any time double money! An ATMhere started paying twice the amount asked for, due to a human error, and hordes of people benefited from the unexpected windfall till it lasted. There was a run on a cash machine in central London when it started paying out double money after an employee accidentally loaded the £10 tray with £20 notes.

Long queues formed outside the Sainsbury’s ATM in Tottenham Court Road as word of the unexpected windfall spread like wildfire. Some customers walked away hundreds of pounds better off after withdrawing maximum of £300 on multiple cards and getting the same amount again each time for free. It’s not the first time a “doubleyour-money” error has occurred at cash machines and on previous occasions some banks have chosen to write off the losses rather than pursue a large number of claims.

One office worker, who did not wish to be named, said he became aware of the blunder when he went to get cash out at lunchtime on Thursday.

“I realized the machine was paying double, so I queued up again and withdrew even more,” he was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying, after benefiting £200 of free cash from the mistake.

“I checked my statement online and it was only showing the amount we had asked for, not what was paid out. It was the best thing in the world,” he said.

The cash machine was finally closed down when a customer reported the problem to the supermarket. “We’re only human, so on very rare occasions ATMs can be loaded with the incorrect cash which means a few get lucky customers get more than they bargained for,” a spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said.

“We’d like to thank our customers for letting the store know and we have turned the machine off while we investigate the matter,” she added.PTI

6.1 quake hits off southwest Philippines: USGS

News4u - News Desk :  A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the sea area off the Philippine island of Luzon early on Sunday, US seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 35 kilometres and hit at 6:19 am (03:49 IST) some 143 kilometres southwest of the city of Baguio and 181 kilometres northwest of the capital Manila.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire a belt around the Pacific Ocean dotted by active volcanoes and unstable ocean trenches.

In February, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the central Philippines triggered landslides that left over a hundred people dead or missing.

One fault line runs directly under Manila, a metropolis of more than 12 million people, and government seismologists have warned the city is unprepared for a major quake.

28 dead in Myanmar communal unrest

News4u-News Desk- Twenty-eight people have been killed and dozens more wounded in several days of sectarian clashes in western Myanmar.

A state of emergency has been declared for Rakhine state, which has been rocked by a wave of rioting and arson, posing a major test for the reformist government which took power last year.

“The latest death toll we can confirm is 28 with 53 people wounded,” the official, who did not want to be named, told the news agency in the state capital Sittwe, without saying whether they were Buddhist or Muslim Rohingya.

The figure raises the last official toll given on Tuesday of around 25 dead and 41 wounded since Friday.

The toll does not include 10 Muslims who were killed on June 3 by a Buddhist mob in apparent revenge for the rape and murder of a woman, which sparked the violence in Rakhine.

Hundreds of homes on both sides have been torched.

An uneasy calm has returned to central Sittwe, a news agency reporter said today, after security forces enforced another night of curfew.

More than 30 people were held after breaking the curfew on yesterday night, the official added.

The stateless Muslim Rohingya are scattered around the globe and viewed by the United Nations as among the most persecuted minorities on the planet.

About 800,000 Rohingya live in Myanmar, according to the UN, mostly in Rakhine.

The government considers the Rohingya to be foreigners, while many citizens see them as illegal immigrants and view them with hostility.

8 Chinese arrested in Himachal sent to 3-days police remand

News4u-News Desk-  The eight Chinese nationals arrested from a monastery in Mandi district were on Wednesday remanded to 3-day police custody by a court in Jogindernagar.

The arrested persons were produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate Jia Lal Azad who remanded them to police custody.

Meanwhile, the investigation agencies were waiting for Chinese interpreters to arrive as the arrested persons understood only Chinese language.

The arrested persons possessed Taiwan passports and police was verifying whether the passports and other travel documents were genuine of fake, police sources said.

The accused, aged between 20 to 40 years, were holding expired tourist visas and illegally working as carpenters and painters in an under-construction palatial house believed to be owned by a Sikkim resident.

Chauntra village, where the 8 persons were apprehended, is located on Mandi-Pathankot highway close to Kangra district, which has a large settlement of Tibetan exiles.

There was no evidence of the arrested persons being “spies”, ADGP S.R.Mardi said.

7 dead in Philippine ferry sinking, floods

News4u - News Desk :  Heavy storms in the Philippines killed at least seven people and left more than a dozen others feared missing at sea, rescuers on Wednesday said.

Five of the confirmed fatalities occurred when a wooden-hulled passenger ferry capsized about 10 kilometres from port off the southwestern island of Palawan yesterday, the coastguard said.

At least 17 other people were believed to be missing, based on the ferry’s manifest, Palawan coastguard spokeswoman Ensign Greanata Jude told the news agency.

But she said the authorities thought many more could be missing as ferry masters frequently misdeclare the actual number of passengers on board to evade safety regulations.

Two people were also killed and another reported missing when heavy rains lashed the southern island of Mindanao, unleashing floods on Monday and Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre said.

Ferries are one of the main modes of transport in the Philippine archipelago of more than 7,100 islands, and accidents at sea are common due to poor safety standards and overloading.

Many accidents occur in rough seas between June and October, when the country is pounded by up to 20 major storms and typhoons.

The coastguard also said seven fishermen were rescued by a cargo vessel after their boat sank before dawn in stormy waters on Manila Bay today.

“The seven persons were using pieces of styrofoam as floating devices,” Manila coastguard desk officer Daisy Peralta told the news agency.

The state weather service warned of more flash floods and landslides in the coming days with a storm approaching Mindanao.

5 killed, 50 injured in Doon Express derailment

News4u - News Desk : Five persons were killed and 50 others injured when seven bogies-five sleeper and two general coaches-of Howrah-Dehradun Doon Express derailed near Mahrawa station in Jaunpur on Thursday.

“Five persons have been killed and 50 injured in the accident,” Superintendent of Police (SP), Jaunpur, Akash Kulhari told a news agency.

The accident took place near Mahrawa under the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway at 1.13 PM when five sleeper (S4 to S8) and two general coaches derailed, Railway Ministry spokesman Anil Saxena said in Delhi.

“While four of the coaches got tilted, three of them derailed. So the coaches which are affected are the 11th onwards from the engine, upto the 17th coach,” he said.

The region, where accident took place, does not have good road connectivity. Relief and rescue teams have been rushed to the spot from Varanasi and Lucknow, a senior official said.

“We have directed the district magistrate to provide essential medical services. All nearby hospitals have been alerted to provide timely medical aid to the affected people”, ADG Railways Gurdarshan Singh said, adding directives have also been issued to make arrangement of water tankers and eatables for those stranded at the spot.

He said Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava has directed UP Roadways buses to ferry people from the affected area.

On the possible cause for the accident, Railway Board member A P Mishra said that exact cause has to be ascertained. It could have been “due to excessive heat causing track expansion or some miscreant activity,” he said, adding that the railway track could be cleared by tomorrow morning.

“Assistant Loco Pilot has infomed railway officials that he had seen some obstruction in the track and he tried to apply brake. While 10 coaches passed, the last seven bogies derailed”, Mishra said, adding that Railway Minister Mukul Roy is likely to reach the spot tonight.

On May 22 in Penukonda in Andhra Pradesh, 25 passengers were killed, 16 of them charred, and 43 injured when the Bangalore-bound Hampi Express rammed into a stationary goods train after its driver apparently overshot the signal near the station.
