Coffee may help undo booze-induced liver damage

News4u-News Desk- Coffee lovers, your coffee addiction may be balancing your booze habit as a new study has found that drinking your morning and afternoon java may actually help reverse the effects of alcohol.

The analysis of previous studies found drinking coffee could diminish the liklihood of developing liver cirrhosis, a disease which kills thousands of people in the UK every year and more than a million people worldwide.

The nine studies involved a total of 430,000 participants of which 1,990 had cirrhosis. Eight of the studies found the more coffee a person drank, the lower their risk in developing the disease.

Risk was reduced by 22 per cent with one cup of coffee, 43 per cent with two cups, 57 per cent with three cups and 65 per cent with four cups, compared to drinking no coffee at all.

Therapeutics, found stronger links between filter coffee and reduced cirrhosis risk than with boiled coffee, but the reason is not clear.

Southampton University’s Oliver Kennedy said that coffee is a complex mixture containing hundreds of chemical compounds and it is unknown which of these is responsible for protecting the liver.

Samantha Heller, a senior clinical nutritionist at New York University Langone Medical Center, said that although coffee contains compounds that have antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory properties, drinking a few cups of coffee a day cannot undo the systematic damage that is the result of being overweight or obese, sedentary, excessive alcohol consumption or drastically mitigate an unhealthy diet.

The findings are published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. (ANI)

Govt. not afraid of NAB, says Pak’s Interior Minister

News4u-News Desk- Clarifying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s statement on National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that the government is neither afraid of, nor annoyed with the organisation and is not planning to clip the body’s powers.

Nisar, while addressing a press conference in Islamabad, said that Sharif had only advised the NAB not to threaten businessmen and investors after receiving complaints from the community.

The Interior Minister said that the NAB was created by former dictator General Pervez Musharraf to target PML-N but if the bureau could not bring anything against the party in those years, how they could do it today, the Dawn reported.

He also accused the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led Government of making money from Haj revenues and said that other corruption scandals like ‘EOBI, PSO, Abandoned Properties Evacuee Trust, New Islamabad Airport and PIA’ all emerged during their regime.

Prime Minister Sharif had on Tuesday said that the NAB was harassing government officers and bureaucrats are afraid of taking decisions because of ‘NAB harassment’.

He said that the organization terrifies the government officers and, thus, hinders them from performing their duty. (ANI)

UK now smacked by ‘cannibalism-inducing’ Blue drugs

News4u-News Desk- A new high has hit the UK streets in the form of blue pills that can ‘turn users into cannibals.’

The drug, called Blue Star, made headlines after Florida user Rudy Eugene chewed off a homeless man’s upon consuming it in 2012, the Daily Star reported.

Experts fear the drug, which is a combination of banned mephedrone and unidentified substances, can lead to addicts having violent spells.

One poster on drugs forum bluelight.org said the new high was taking off due to shortages of regular mephedrone in London.

He said that he just wanted to warn people against the Blue as a person he knew had a bad reaction: tremors, swelling, veins in hand went bigger and red for a good hour or so, slight hallucinations.

Pharmacologist and legal highs expert Dr Paul Skett from Glasgow University said: “We know about what’s in mephedrone but bath salts is a very broad term and could refer to a number of things. This substance could mimic the effects of mephedrone or MDMA or amphetamines.

Skett added, “We already know mephedrone itself can make people anxious or upset, so taking it alongside something else could potentially magnify its effects.” (ANI)

President Obama along with the nation mourned Harper Lee’s demise

News4u-News Desk- : President Barack Obama was one of those many Americans whom honoured and mourned the demise of author Harper Lee, announced on February 19.

The author of ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’, who died at the age of 89, was once declared by the US president as an author “who changed America for the better” with her works, reports the Guardian.

The Obama family in a statement said Lee never wrote ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ for an award or famer, rather “she was a country girl who just wanted to tell an honest story about life as she saw it.”

“But what that one story did, more powerfully than one hundred speeches possibly could, was change the way we saw each other, and then the way we saw ourselves,” the statement added.

Former US president George W Bush, who awarded the author the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 in one of the most public outings of her later years, released a statement saying, “Harper Lee was ahead of her time and her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird prodded America catch up with her.”

Hailed as a brilliant writer and an extraordinary person, she was honoured by friends, families and every person across the globe who was inspired by her simplicity and honesty.

“Knowing Nelle these past few years has been not just an utter delight but an extraordinary privilege,” said her literary agent, Andrew Nurnberg, in a statement.

Mourning on the death of the most famous author of the publishing house, the president and publisher of HarperCollins US, Michael Morrison, said that the world knows Harper Lee was a brilliant writer but “what many don’t know is that she was an extraordinary woman of great joyfulness, humility and kindness.”

Aaron Sorkin, the writer of ‘The West Wing’ and ‘The Social Network’ who last week announced that he was working on a Broadway adaption of Lee’s Pulitzer-winning 1960 novel about racial prejudice in the American south, told, “I was saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Harper Lee, one of America’s most beloved authors.”

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey took to her Twitter handle to say,”Harper Lee my 1st favorite author! I always wanted to interview her. She said” honey I already said everything I had to say”. #RIPHarperLee”

Ava DuVernay, director of the civil rights drama Selma, shared a still from the 1962 film adaption of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ starring Gregory Peck on Twitter and wrote, “You never really understand a person. until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Thank you, #HarperLee.”

Former US president George W Bush, who awarded the author the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 in one of the most public outings of her later years, released a statement saying, “Harper Lee was ahead of her time, and her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird prodded America catch up with her.”

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook also paid tribute to the author with one of her own quotes over twitter, “Rest in peace, Harper Lee. “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”"

Science fiction author Stephen King acknowledged Lee’s great contribution to Truman Capote’s non-fiction crime classic In Cold Blood and wrote on his twitter handle, “Let’s celebrate the life of Harper Lee, who wrote an American classic and helped her friend Truman Capote write another.”

Not saying much about the reason of the death, publishing house HarperCollins released a statement on February 19 confirming her death which said “died peacefully last night.” (ANI)

5 drinks per week can help keep heart risks at bay

News4u-News Desk- Cheers! A team of research has suggested that by boozing in moderation, you can drink your way to a hearty heart.

Three to five drinks a week are part of a heart-healthy lifestyle, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology scientists concluded.

Researcher Imre Janszky said that drinking a little alcohol every day can be part of a healthy lifestyle and added that it doesn’t matter whether a person drinks wine, liquor or beer.

“It’s primarily the alcohol that leads to more good cholesterol, among other things,” he said, adding “But alcohol can also cause higher blood pressure, so it’s best to drink moderate amounts relatively often.”

With colleagues from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Professor Janszky and his team have published two studies looking at the link between alcohol and heart health.

The studies showed that those who drank three to five drinks each week were 33 per cent less prone to heart failure than those who abstained, or drank infrequently. In the case of heart attacks, the risk was reduced by 28 per cent with each additional one-drink increment.

The studies are published in the Journal of Cardiology and the Journal of Internal Medicine. (ANI)

`Confident` Dhoni insists India upbeat over World T20 title

News4u-Sports Desk- India’s limited-over skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday expressed confidence on winning the upcoming World T20 in the country, saying that the team has all the required ingredients and qualities needed to clinch the title.

“I have the belief and also the talent as required to win a big tournament. This team has all the ingredient. What will be important is to keep the team fit and at the same time try to give as many games as to all the individuals who are the part of the side. A lot of that will also depend upon where we are positioned in the tournament, in Asia Cup, especially. After which we have two games before the World T20 Cup starts. I feel if everybody gets chance to play, it will be very good for us,” Dhoni told the media ahead of Asia Cup.

Reflecting on his side’s strategy, the 34-year-old said that India would try to dismiss the big hitters as early as possible in order to keep the match in their favour.

“It’s all about the team and the talent you have. But ultimately you have to go and do well on the field. That’s what cricket is all about. In this format, you have to keep the big hitters away from the game. If you are playing against a team that have two big hitters. You have to make sure that they don’t score a runs because if the big hitters are scoring the run then they will usually take the game from you,” he added.

The wicketkeeper-batsman also hoped for fast bowler Mohammad Shami’s quick fitness, insisting that he would strengthen his side’s bowling attack.

Shami has been ruled out of the Asia Cup due to hamstring injury. His availibility for World T20 is also unlikely.

“Of course he will have to prove his fitness. If he doesn’t, we have replacement. He has been one bowler who has bowled really well for us with the new ball and also at the depth. If he will be fit then our bowling attack will look better,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni further expressed his views on New Zealand retiring skipper Brendon McCullum, who smashed the fastest Test century during his side’s second Test against Australia.

He took just 54 balls to reach the three-figure landmark, surpassing former West Indies skipper Vivian Richards and Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq’s record of 56 balls.

Dhoni lavished praise on McCullum and described him as a good ambassador of cricket.

“He is just a fantastic cricketer. He is also a wicketkeeper-batsman. He has played a lot of ODI, T20s for New Zealand. He is the kind of batsman who really entertains the crowd right from the very first ball. He has been a very good brand ambassador when it comes to cricket,” Dhoni insisted.

India are going into next week’s Asia Cup T20 in Bangladesh as the number one team in the world and will aim to lift the shortest format’s pinnacle event title for a second time. (ANI)
