Hamas rejects Gaza truce unless blockade lifted

News4u-News Desk- Hamas on Wednesday rejected a ceasefire to end 16 days of deadly fighting with Israel unless the blockade on the Gaza Strip is lifted, its chief Khaled Meshaal said in Doha.

“We reject today… and will reject in the future” a ceasefire before negotiations on Hamas’s demands, which include lifting years of blockade against the Palestinian enclave, Meshaal told reporters on Wednesday.

Listing the eight-year blockade is a main demand of Hamas which also wants the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and Israel to free prisoners.

As international calls for an end to the fighting in Gaza mount, Meshaal insisted that the Islamist Hamas “welcomes all efforts to end the aggression” and “does not object” to mediation by any party, including Egypt.

“We will not accept any initiative that does not lift the blockade on our people and that does not respect their sacrifices.

“Let us agree on achieving our demands and we will then agree on the zero-hour for a ceasefire,” Meshaal said.

Responsibility for MH17 downing lays with Putin: US

News4u-News Desk- The US has intensified its attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin, holding him responsible for the tragic downing of a Malaysian plane by a missile over a part of Ukraine controlled by Russia-backed separatists.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down using a surface-to-air missile from an SA-11 anti-aircraft battery, killing all 298 people on board.

The US intelligence community believes the separatists shot the plane down by accident.

“The Russian separatists we believe fired this, in general, could not be doing what they are doing without the Russians,” State Department deputy spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters in Washington.

“And responsibility lays at the feet of President Putin, not just for this but for every incident that we have seen throughout this conflict” Harf said.

US officials have earlier said training given by Russia to the separatist on air-defense weapons was a contributing factor for their assessment.

“We have laid out a very detailed case. We have been very open about our assessments here. The Russians have repeatedly lied about what is happening on the ground. They said there weren’t troops in Crimea when there were troops all over Crimea. So there’s just no credibility on their side,” she said.

The White House said the question of who specifically fired the missile is for the investigation to determine.

“The fact that we don’t know that yet does not absolve Russia of its responsibility for creating an environment in which militants were trained, given weapons, and encouraged to fight,” said White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz.

“It is important for us to realise that while we work to determine who is responsible for literally firing this missile, the picture emerging is not in doubt.

“We assessed that it was an SA-11 and that it came from a separatist-controlled area. And we know Russia has provided arming and training for these separatists,” Schultz asserted.

He said the US is concerned by the Russian support for the separatists and hence taken a number of steps to rally around the international community in this regard.

“That is why I think President Putin feels increasingly isolated. That is why I think that people, even in Russia, are starting to question the direction President Putin is taking their country. I think that is why you see an international coalition building consensus around this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pentagon said Russia continues to support the rebels and it has last week sent a column of over 100 vehicles including tanks, artillery, multiple launch rocket systems.

Pentagon spokesman Army Col Steve Warren said: “There is no question that the Russians are backing these separatists and they bear responsibility…for what happens in eastern Ukraine.”

Cabinet clears 49% FDI in insurance with Indian control

News4u-Business Desk- The Cabinet on Thursday approved 49 percent foreign investment in insurance companies through the FIPB route ensuring management control in the hands of Indian promoters.

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved raising of FDI cap in insurance sector to 49 percent from 26 percent,” sources said after a meeting of the CCEA, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

With the Cabinet approving the amendments to the long pending Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, it will now be taken up by Parliament.

In his budget speech, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that the insurance sector is investment starved and there is a need to increase the composite cap in the sector to 49 percent, with full Indian management and control, through the FIPB route.

The move would help insurance firms to get much needed capital from overseas partners.

The proposal to raise FDI cap has been pending since 2008 when the previous UPA government introduced the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill to hike foreign holding in insurance joint ventures to 49 percent from the existing 26 percent.

However, the Bill could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha because of opposition from several political parties, including the BJP.

The insurance sector was opened up for private sector in 2000 after the enactment of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act, 1999 (IRDA Act, 1999).

This Act permitted foreign shareholding in insurance companies to the extent of 26 percent with an aim to provide better insurance coverage and to augment the flow of long term resources for financing infrastructure.

The industry has been demanding for long to increase the FDI limit for adequate funds for expansion of the sector.

CCEA okays sale of 10 mn tonnes of wheat in open market

The government on Thursday approved sale of 10 million tonnes of wheat from FCI stock in the open market in order to boost domestic supply and check prices.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

“The CCEA has cleared sale of about 10 million tonnes of wheat via the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to bulk buyers,” sources said.

The reserve price under OMSS has been fixed at Rs 1,500 per quintal plus freight charges for old crop and five per cent premium for new crop, the sources added.

Wheat would be sold through e-tendering process by the state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) with an aim to improve domestic supply of wheat and check prices, besides reducing storage pressure on the FCI.

Wheat prices have firmed up in the last few days. Wholesale price of wheat has increased to Rs 19 per kg in the national market in July, from Rs 16.10 per kg in the same month last year, as per the official data.

In 2013-14, the government had announced sale of 8.5 million tonnes of wheat via OMSS, but was able to sell only 5.8 million tonnes, earning about Rs 9,310 crore.

Till early this month, the FCI had a wheat stock of 40 million tonnes, against the requirement of 20 million tonnes.

The country had produced a record 95.60 million tonnes of wheat in the 2013-14 crop year.

Malabar naval exercise not aimed at containing China: Pentagon

News4u-News Desk- The annual India-US bilateral Malabar naval exercise which kicked off Thursday in the Asia Pacific region is not aimed at containing China, the Pentagon has said.

“It has absolutely no relations anything to do with China. If anything it is strengthening the US naval presence in the Pacific Ocean region…and maritime partnership with our allies,” a Pentagon official told reporters in Washington.

“It is totally a routine exercise with no relations to China,” the official said.

The wargames this year has Japan as an special invitee. China had in the past raised objections over Japan’s participation in the drills held mainly between US and India. The last exercise involving Japan was held in 2009.

The official said the participating countries are working with specific training exercises such as communication, search and rescue, helicopter cross deck evolutions and anti-submarine welfare.

Over 7,000 American defence personnel are participating in the exercise and also includes nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, Ticonderoga-class destroyer USS Shiloh, Arleigh Burke-class destroyer John S McCain and nuclear submarine USS Columbus.

It also includes P-3 Orion aircraft and MH-60R helicopters.

India has sent its three warships — INS Ranvijay and Shivalik along with fleet support tanker ship INS Shakti.

Responding to a question on Japanese participation, the official said it strengthens the partnership with them.

“It also promotes India’s growing navy as they expand beyond their own areas of influence, in the Pacific Ocean and not just their own home area of the Indian Ocean,” she said.

India and the US have held 17 editions of the Malabar-series wargames since 1992 and had involved Japan, Australia and Singapore in 2007 in the Pacific Ocean after which the Chinese government raised objections.

India had stopped involving others but last year after the visit of Indian Prime Minister to Japan and the reciprocal visit by the Japanese Prime Minister, India agreed to have Japan in these drills.

The three Indian warships taking part in the wargames earlier held exercises with the Russian Navy in Vladivostok last week.

Varun Dhawan visits Nashik jail for his next film, ‘Badlapur’

News4u-Entertainment Desk- After running across mustard fields and doing all the flirting with his lead heroines, our new age Govinda, Varun Dhawan is ready to take us by surprise. He seems to have pushed the boundaries with his role in his next, titled Badlapur.

For a particular sequence for the Sriram Raghavan directorial, Varun had to shoot in Nashik jail in a scene where he meets the women convicts from the jail. The scene was shot over two days and Nawazuddin Siddiqui was also a part of it. Varun, who visited the jail for the first time, was initially skeptical but was surprised to see that the women convicts lived in the jail with their kids, aged below five years. Varun even met some of them after the shoot.

The film, which is a dark thriller, revolves around violence and sex, and previously, it was also reported that Sriram made Varun shoot a scene in a morgue full of dead corpses. Agencies

For mystic life and a spiritual tune-up, go to Brasilia

News4u-Travel desk- Brazil’s capital is well known for the modern architecture of its designer, the late Oscar Niemeyer. But mystic types come for a different kind of thrill, like communicating with the spirits.

The greater Brasilia area has around nearly 1,000 worship sites for every possible faith in the country with, at least nominally, the world’s largest Catholic populatio — and esoteric rites and mediums are part of the mix.

In Vale do Amanhecer (Valley of Dawn), a town 40 kilometers (25 miles) outside Brasilia, people dress up in the garb of civilizations past, like the Maya, or as wizards and nymphs as they trudge through the streets in rapturous contact with the spirits. Tourists positively lap it up.

What on earth is going on? Actually, it is going on underground.

Mystics say Brasilia, inaugurated in 1960, was built atop an area with great cosmic energy — a plateau 1,100 meters above sea level, resting on a subsoil of crystals.

Koraly Aredes, an 86-year-old former Catholic missionary who spent more than half her life in Africa, says she found her faith here.

“I saw so much misery in my life that I stopped believing in God, and I found my answer in Spiritism,” she said, alluding to the belief that inside human bodies are spirits that leave the body after death and can resurface in another body.

The cult surrounding the mystic buzz in Vale do Amanhecer is said to have 100,000 mediums. It was founded in the 1960s by a clairvoyant widow named Neiva Chaves Zelaya, who died in 1985 and is known as Tia (Aunt) Neiva.

The main mystical site looks like a space ship, and inside it bright colors and mirrors divide up spaces dedicated to things or people like the moon, the sun, Jesus Christ and the Queen of Sheba — all part of Tia Neiva’s vision.

Long lines form as people wait for spiritual cures for what ails them, a cleansing of their souls or hook-ups with somebody out there in the great beyond. As chants hum, incense fills the air.

Paulo Roberto, a 50-year-old medium — and lawyer — wears brown and black garb that looks like it comes right out of a space-based sci-fi flick.

“Catholics wear cassocks, Jews have skullcaps, and we also wear special clothes, in order to represent a reincarnation or our mission in Vale,” he said.

But the mystic tourism industry has much, much more to offer.

The hottest draw, at 100,000 visits a month, is Brasilia’s Temple of Good Will, a pyramid that is open 24 hours a day and belongs to no particular religion, where people walk through a spiral-like space to recharge and tidy up their energies.

The mystic and religious experiences on offer are so popular that the local government is working with UNESCO to fashion a full-blown religious tour out of it, said Meire France, a tourism official.

A bit further from the capital is the town of Abadiania, where thousands of people from around the world arrive every week to be treated by Brazil’s most famous medium, a man named Joao de Deus, and undergo what he calls ‘spiritual surgery” — complete with scalpel, needles, no anesthesia and no pain.

And in the town of Gama, an illiterate medium named Valentim Ribeiro Souza has been treating patients for the past 55 years, three times a week.

His faithful are people suffering from cancer or who have not found answers in traditional medicine.

Valentim, 73, works a pair of small scissors adroitly, tapping people on the head with them or snapping them open and shut as if he actually were cutting open skin, and wriggling with a spasm or abruptly screaming.

“Today, I am completely cured,” says a happy Leonice Silva Rocha, 70, who says the doctor cured her only remaining kidney of cancer.

Ribeiro Souza churns out health at a furious pace: in four hours, he has treated 900 sick people. Helping him, he says, are 60 spirits. He says he himself spent 14 years in a wheelchair until a spontaneous cure turned him into a spiritual doctor.

“We see everything there is inside people,” Ribeiro Souza said, referring to himself and the spirits.AFP
