Fruits, veggies make you more attractive

News4u-Features Desk-Even a few weeks of eating fruits andvegetables may give your skin a healthy glow and make you look cuter, a new study has suggested.

Scientists at St Andrews University monitored the food consumption of 35 people and clicked their pictures over this period.

Eating an average of 2.9 more portions of fruit and vegetables a day made them look healthier when rated by others at the end of the study, while an extra 3.3 portions enhanced their attractiveness, the Daily Mail reported.

Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids, which guard against cell damage from pollution and UV rays and can prevent age-related disorders like heart disease and cancer.

It was previously known that eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange. However, it was not known that a small increase in these red and yellow pigments in the skin could be perceptible to others - or that it was seen as appealing.

A camera that can gauge close-up changes to the skin’s redness, yellowness and lightness found that these considerably increased in people who increased their intake of fruit and vegetables.

Using light sensors, the researchers revealed that these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in the skin.

There are hundreds of different types of carotenoids.

But those thought to have the most dramatic effect on the skin are lycopene - which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red colour - and beta-carotene, found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach.

Skin colour can also be affected by chemicals called polyphenols, found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.

“We expected the colour change to be most dramatic in people who ate very few fruit and vegetables to start off with, but it was actually across the board,” said Ross Whitehead, who lead the study.

“A lot of the people were already eating close to the recommended amount.

“But we found even a couple of extra portions could still make a difference to their skin colour,” Whitehead added.

He said the team, who studied white and Asian volunteers, would look at whether this was valid for other races too, and whether it had a smaller or greater effect in older people, as the volunteers were all aged 18 to 25.ANI

Europe’s first green restaurant

News4u-Travel Desk- You can have your adventure and eat too at Europe’s first green restaurant where traditional German food is served in a beautifully lit wooden hilltop restaurant powered by solar energy at a height of 1,025 metres amid tall conifer trees in Black Forest.

Rappenecker Hutte is a 350-year-old farm house in south Germany which has been serving as a hikers’ inn for several years. The hut in 1995 was the starting point of the downhill course of the Mountain Bike World Championship and is a well-known station of the Black Forest Ultra Bike Marathon.

Europe’s first solar-powered restaurant has been a pilot project of the world’s famous solar research institution — the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. The restaurant is not connected to any power grid and generates its own energy from photovoltaic cells and a small wind turbine.

Due to heavy snowing during winter, the restaurant opens only for six months from April to September when it receives around 500 guests per week. The restaurant has a capacity to handle around 100 guests in its groundfloor and terrace restaurant besides one in the garden with apple trees and cherry orchards.

“People come here for adventure trips, mountain biking or hiking and stop for traditional German food. We generate all our energy from renewable sources as it is very expensive to get a grid connection at this site,” Dirk Behringer, owner of the Rappenecker Hutte, said in an interview.

Like the restaurant, the story of its present owner is equally thrilling as Behringer, 57, left his fat package job as an accountant in a multinational company in 2003 to stay here with his wife.

“I have travelled across the world and as I was growing old I realised I want to retire and live in nature. So I applied for the lease of the restaurant and got it for 10 years. Since then I along with my wife live here in summer and we travel during winter,” said the six-foot-tall man dressed in a T-shirt and shorts.

The Behringer couple has employed no helper and does everything from cooking to cleaning at this hilltop restaurant which gives a picturesque view of the Black Forest.

There are not many dishes on the menu for sudden visitors.

On a routine basis, there is one vegetarian dish which includes fried potatoes with dense milk cream, boiled vegetables and fresh salad. The non-vegetarian dish includes fried potatoes with pork and salad. There are also options to pick from fresh juices, hard drinks and coffee.

“There is a waiting period for bookings for parties as many people now love to organise birthdays, wedding parties here,” said Behringer while busy cooking some fried potatoes.

All vegetables, fruits, dairy products and meat supplies to the restaurant come from farms in nearby villages.

For adventure lovers and mountain bikers, Rappenecker Hutte is a permanent stop during their trip.

“I come here biking often during summer and stop for an hour to eat something. It is a beautiful place and unique in itself for it generates its own energy using renewable resources,” said Tony Baumgart, a mountain biker.IANS

Take desserts for breakfast, get slim

News4u-News Desk -  Those with a weakness for sweets can now include cookies and cake in a 600 caloriebreakfast menu with some proteins and carbs to shed weight in a pleasurable way and also stay slim.

Attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term, explains Daniela Jakubowicz, professor at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, who led the study.

Over the course of a 32-week-long study, participants who added dessert to their breakfast - cookies, cake, or chocolate - lost an average of 40 pounds more than a group that avoided such foods, the journal Steroids reports.

What’s more, they kept off the pounds longer. A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning, and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance, according to aTel Aviv statement.

And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger, explains Jakubowicz. While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

These findings were based on 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults, who were randomly assigned to one of two diet groups with identical caloric intake - the men consumed 1,600 calories daily and the women 1,400.

However, the first group was given a low carbohydrate diet including a small 300 calorie breakfast, and the second was given a 600 calorie breakfast high in protein and carbohydrates, always including a dessert item (i.e. chocolate).

Halfway through the study, participants in both groups had lost an average of 33 pounds per person. But in the second half of the study, results differed drastically.

The participants in the low-carb group regained an average of 22 pounds each, but participants in the group with a larger breakfast lost another 15 pounds each.

At the end of the 32 weeks, those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 40 pounds more per person than their peers.

Jakubowicz conducted the study with Julio Wainstein and Mona Boaz from Tel Aviv and Oren Froy of Hebrew University Jerusalem.IANS

An apple a day keeps cholesterol away

News4u-Entertainment Desk- An apple a day can really keep the doctor away - by reducing bad cholesterol levels in women, according to a new study.

“Apples are truly a miracle fruit that convey benefits beyond fiber content,” said Bahram H. Arjmandi, Margaret A. Sitton Professor and Chair, Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences at The Florida State University, who led the study.

Animal studies have shown that apple pectin and polyphenols in apple improve lipid metabolism and lower the production of pro-inflammatory molecules.

Arjmandi’s research is the first to evaluate the long-term cardio-protective effects of daily consumption of apple in postmenopausal women.

The study randomly assigned 160 women ages 45-65 to one of two dietary intervention groups: one received dried apples daily (75g/day for 1 year) and the other group ate dried prunes every day for a year.

Blood samples were taken at 3, 6 and 12-months.

The results surprised Arjmandi, who stated that incredible changes in the apple-eating women happened by 6 months - they experienced a 23 per cent decrease in LDL cholesterol.

The daily apple consumption also led to a lowering of lipid hydroperoxide levels and C-reactive protein in those women.

“I never expected apple consumption to reduce bad cholesterol to this extent while increasing HDL cholesterol or good cholesterol by about 4 per cent,” said Arjmandi.

Yet another advantage is that the extra 240 calories per day consumed from the dried apple did not lead to weight gain in the women; in fact, they lost on average 3.3 lbs.

“Reducing body weight is an added benefit to daily apple intake” he said.

Part of the reason for the weight loss could be the fruit’s pectin, which is known to have a satiety effect.

The results were presented at Experimental Biology 2011 in Washington, DC.ANI

‘Women can handle old age pressures better than men’

  • News4u - Entertainment & Features Desk : A woman is emotionally more stronger than a man, goes a saying but now a new survey has found that due to their inner strengths, older women can handle old age pressures better than men.46 per cent elderly women were found less isolated due to their inner strengths like patience, fine-tuning with family and society members than elderly men (31 per cent). This was revealed by an all-India survey of 10,000 senior citizens in 20 states done by an NGO, Agewell Foundation. The survey aimed to know causes of isolation in old age and its consequences on the health of the elderly in particular and society in general.

ccording to psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh, women have more emotional strength and tolerance than men.

“Its not only the older women but women of all ages are more stronger than males.”
“The nature of life that a woman has to lead in our society is different from man. The hardships of daily life make them stronger than man,” says Himanshu Rath, founder of Agewell Foundation.

Matthew Cherian, Chairman of Helpage India also agrees that the efforts made by a woman to run the daily household make her stronger.

“Women endure old age better due to their complex life and as a result have an active ageing than man,” he says.

Chugh also points out that woman are more prone to depression than man.

“Woman face empty nest syndrome in old age. When children settle down away from home, the home becomes an empty nest. Since a mother is more attached to her children than the father, she is more likely to get depressed,” he says.

71 per cent older people surveyed felt that in spite of their active participation in family’s financial matters as well as social obligations and having originally possessed major part of the property, younger family members were ignoring them.

73.5 per cent of older persons in urban areas had limited access to social interactions and consequently they face lower self-esteem and decline in interpersonal skills. They are also found to be more self-conscious.

Even people living in joint families have less interaction with family members, with 39 per cent complaining so.

In the opinion of 86 per cent older persons, isolation in old age is critical, as it leads to depression resulting in many diseases, both mental and physical.

    • 65-year-old widower Javed Ali of Shahdara lives alone in his house. His sons and daughters left him and settled in other parts of the city.“I anyhow managed to take care of my daily needs. I do not have any major disease but I feel depression due to lack of family support. When I visit my grandchildren, I feel happy and satisfied,” he says.According to Rath, “Depression is quite common among many of the people, particularly in old age. It is a major social challenge that cannot and should not be ignored.

“However, to fight depression in old age, both the suffering older persons and the family members need to join hands and work together to bring back the golden happy times.”

Agewell has launched a booklet to tackle depression during old age. It deals with the symptoms and causes of depression and loneliness and provides guidelines for the senior citizens to fight it. (PTI)

Blame bad lifestyle for bad health

News4u-News Desk- Sports scientists have revealed that impairments tohealth and physical performance are not primarily a result of aging but of bad lifestyle habits and lack of exercise.

Sporty elderly people have a life expectancy that is almost 4 years higher and are often faster than younger athletes.

Dieter Leyk and his team analysed the stamina of more than 600, 000 marathon and half marathon runners and asked them about their lifestyle habits and their health.

Marathon running is particularly suitable for studying because participants have to put in sufficient training hours for the competition, and the athletes accommodate this into their day accordingly.

The scientists found that unfavourable characteristics such as obesity, smoking, and lack of physical activity were rare in runners, and reductions in physical performance were more likely to be the result of biological aging processes.

These reductions make their presence felt only after the 54th year of life and are but slight.

More than 25 per cent of 50- to 69-year-olds had taken up running only in the preceding 5 years and participated in a marathon nonetheless. ANI

Suicide bombers kill 22 Afghan civilians near NATO base

News4u-News Desk- KANDAHAR: Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a market area in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing at least 22 people wounding about 50, authorities said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the explosion, which occurred near small shops in a parking and waiting area for trucks that supply logistics to Kandahar Air Field, a massive military installation run by the US-led coalition.

One suicide bomber detonated his motorbike filled with explosives first. Then, as people rushed to assist the casualties, another suicide bomber on foot walked up to the area and blew himself up, said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for Kandahar province. He said the death toll stood at 22 and that 50 were wounded. All the dead were civilians, he said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion occurred 500 meters (yards) from an Afghan military base and about five kilometers (three miles) from the main gate to the air field.AP

Don’t blame beer for your ‘beer belly”

News4u - Features Desk : Drinking beer is not the main cause of a “beer belly” although it can contribute to overall fatness, scientists have revealed.

A team from Germany analysed the weight as well as the hip and waist measurements of nearly 20,000 people over four years. Participants were asked to detail how much beer they drank and what else they consumed each day.

Their beer consumption was placed into a number of categories, from “very light” to “heavy”. The researchers concluded that their study “does not support the common belief of a site-specific effect of beer on the abdomen, the beer belly”, Daily Mail reported.

“Beer consumption seems to be rather associated with an increase in overall body fatness,” they wrote in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

A beer belly was defined as one that bulges distinctly as the waist and was proportionally large in comparison to hip measurement and body size.IANS
